Repairs on the Go

When your home is on wheels and you move it every two to three weeks, you need to be your own handyman. Thankfully, Steve is pretty good when it comes to DIY repairs.

Recently on our move from one campground to another, we noticed a couple of drivers motioning to us. While Steve is used to getting the bird from other drivers, this was different. We pulled over immediately and did a complete walk around of both the RV and Jeep. We could not find any issues. Even so, when we got to the next rest stop, we pulled off and did a more thorough investigation. Still, we could not find any issues. Back on the road, again a trucker motioned at us pointing sort of down by the driver. So we pull off at the next rest stop (thankfully they were very close together) and start the inspection process again. This time Steve does notice a piece of the exterior panelling is loose in front of the front driver’s side wheel. It appears a screw fell out that holds the bottom of this piece secure. Guessing while driving, it was flapping but every time we stopped it fell back into place and looked normal. Tried putting a new screw or two in but none that we had were long enough. OK, let’s bungee it into place. (This is not the first time, and I’m sure it won’t be the last, that we use bungees until we could get somewhere to complete the fix) So after a few tries and figuring out where to hook the cords we get it in place. Off to the campground which thankfully is just a few miles down the road. Once we’re settled in at the campground, Steve will be able to figure out what is needed for a permanent fix and go to the store for supplies.

Temporary fix

Of course not all repairs we will be able to do ourselves. When that happens we will need to find a shop and check into a hotel. It’s just one of the joys of living in a home on wheels.
